Xiaomi AirDots Pro 2 Review. Apple AirPods Pro alternative?

Xiaomi AirDots Pro 2

The latest wireless earbuds from Xiaomi are called the Xiaomi Air 2. I’ve been using these ones for just over two weeks. You can find them at Bangood (use coupon code “BGXM2RS” for $62.99) or Aliexpress.

Design

The design is very similar to what you’d get from the Apple Airpods. You basically have this long tube sticking out of your ear. Personally I’m not a big fan of this design but I do understand that a lot of people love this look.

At least this tube is there for a reason. There are a couple of microphones in this tube and whenever you’re making phone calls using this earbud, your voice quality is great even if it’s windy out. I haven’t had any complaints whenever I was making phone calls.

You’re also using one of those microphones whenever you are using the personal assistant on your phone (iPhone – Siri or Android – Google assistant).

You can say things like:

  • turn up the volume
  • turn down the volume
  • skip to the next song and so on

The earbuds also have a built-in sensor so every time you take one out of your ear the music will stop and whatever you put it back in the music will start again.

On the outside, you can double-tap for certain commands. The commands can be changed if you install a Chinese app. For now, there is only a Chinese app available for Xiaomi AirDots Pro 2. If you do install that Chinese app you can actually change what happens when you double-tap on them.

You can double-tap:

  • to skip to the next song
  • to pause the music
  • to access the Google assistant

You can change those but you’re gonna have to understand a bit of Chinese or basically try a lot of combinations. Eventually, that’s gonna change and there’ll be an app in English but as of now, there is only an app in Chinese.

Of course with the earbuds, you also get the charging case. This may sound silly but I love how Xiaomi AirDots Pro 2 charging case sounds when you close it. It charges through a USB-C port and that’s a great addition unless you’re using an iPhone. In this case, you’re gonna need another cable.

Battery and charging

It takes about an hour to fully charge the case and the earpads from 0 to 100. On one charge on the earbuds, you get between 3 to 4 hours if you’re listening to about 75 to 80% of the volume. I think that’s pretty decent because with the case you get about 12 hours of listening time, which isn’t bad.

On the side of the case there is also a little button and whenever you are pairing Xiaomi AirDots Pro 2 for the first time, you’re gonna have to hold that button pressed for between 6 to 8 seconds and then the case will go into pairing mode. Then you can pair them with your phone. Once they’re paired with your phone you don’t have to do anything. Just open the case and they will be paired to your phone by the time you put the earbuds in your ear. You can just use the right on or the left on depending on what you need or you can use them together.

Even though you can get almost 4 hours of listening time on one charge, I usually found that I have to take them off after about 2.5 hours because my ears do get tired. Since Xiaomi AirDots Pro 2 is one-size-fits-all, they may be more or less comfortable depending on how big or small your ears are.

For me they’re average, I’ve had other earbuds that were more comfortable on in the past. At least Xiaomi AirDots Pro 2 very light and after a while you kind of forget that you even have them on in your ears.

Sound quality

We have to talk about the most important thing for any wireless earbuds and that is the sound quality. I have to say that I was expecting better from these ones because they’re not exactly cheap. They’re much cheaper than the Apple Airpods and they do sound better than the original Apple Airpods. But there are other wireless earbuds available on the market that sound better and are cheaper. Like Blitzwolf BW-FYE7 for example. This model of Blitzwolf for about $45 actually sounds better than Xiaomi AirDots Pro 2.

Xiaomi ones don’t get loud enough, in my opinion. If you are using Xiaomi earbuds in a loud environment you’re hearing the outside noise more than you’re actually hearing the earbuds. If they would have been a bit louder I think they would have been better. Of course, it’s not that great to listen to super loud things in your ears so maybe that’s a good thing. But I wish Xiaomi AirDots Pro 2 would have been a bit louder.

There is decent bass but not overwhelming and you can still hear the mids and the highs as well. So for me, the sound is decent but there are other better options that are a bit cheaper.

Sound lag

I’ve also noticed that there is a bit of lag for certain applications, at least for my iPhone. If I open the YouTube app and watch a video on YouTube, I hear the sound about half a second late. If I open Chrome and watch the exact same video, there is no lag. That may have to do with the YouTube app at least on iOS because if I use this on my Pixelbook Go for example to watch some Netflix movies or to watch a YouTube video, there is no lag for that one.

Some games and some applications do have a bit of lag whenever you are using Xiaomi AirDots Pro 2. On the other pair of cheaper earbuds that I’ve tried, that one you get almost no lag or any applications. So once again, more expensive but not necessarily better.

Conclusion

I love many things about these earbuds, they’re great in many ways. I love the fact that you can customize the touch control, something that I haven’t seen in the past. I love how easy it to use them: you just open the case and they’re already connected. So there are lots of things that that are great about Xiaomi AirDots Pro 2. I love the fact they get the updates, something that I haven’t seen with other earbuds in the past.

But since I’ve tried many other and wireless earbuds in the past, I know that there are better choices for less money. Most people aren’t gonna know that because most people haven’t actually tried a hundred wireless earbuds like me, so for most people, these Xiaomi new earbuds are going to sound great. But I think that there are better options out there.
